Toxic Mold: Background Info and Facts

When water gets inside your house and wets the sheetrock, wood, carpets or insulation, mold can grow. Mold grows both on the front and backsides of wall or on the inside or outside of ceilings and roofs. This means that you may not see or smell it, even if it’s there. If you have had water damage, you should think about the possibility of mold growing inside your house, and what this might mean for you and your loved ones.

What is Toxic Mold?

There are as many as 1000 mold varieties that can grow indoors and cause problems. One of the most common types is Black Mold (Stachybotrys atra). Black Mold produces airborne poisons (myotoxins) that can cause a range of illnesses such as asthma attacks, allergies, dizziness, flu-like symptoms, skin rashes and fatigue.

Molds are very hardy, and can live and grow just about anywhere. There are many different kinds. Mold comes in many different colors. Molds need moisture and a food source to grow. Floods, leaking pipes, steam, leaking windows; high humidity and leaking roofs create the ideal growth environment for molds.

Health Problems Caused by Toxic Mold

Toxic mold contamination can result in severe health problems. Under certain conditions, molds can produce poisons (myotoxins) that cause a toxic reaction in humans. Myotoxins cause some the most serious side effects of mold exposure. Exposure to myotoxins can suppress or alter the immune system, making it much easier for you to get sick. Myotoxins can also cause your lungs to swell that often lead to illnesses such as pneumonia. These deadly poisons have also been known to cause:

  • Severe eye irritation
  • Severe nose irritation
  • Severe throat irritation
  • Headaches
  • Diarrhea
  • Myotoxins also increase a person’s susceptibility to cancer and many kinds of infectious diseases.

Other types of mold such as the Asperigillus species and Stachybotrys chartarum, have been know to cause the most extreme health effects of molds. The toxin produced by Asperigillus, known as Aflatoxin can cause cancer. It is also very toxic to the liver, brain, kidneys and heart. Aflotoxins also associated with the infection aspergillosis.

People exposed to Stachybotrys chartarum have experienced recurring flu-like symptoms, fatigue, respiratory problems, fevers, difficulty breathing and a weakened immune system.

Your Rights

There are no federal or state laws, regulations or guidelines regarding mold exposure, identification, or compensation. However, with the right lawyer you may have a claim. Your attorney will look into the possibility of suing your insurance company, the builder, or anyone else who may have caused your home to become contaminated.
