Surgical Error or Negligence:

All surgeries can be risky in their own right. Unfortunately, patients are sometimes needlessly injured or even killed by surgeons who do not perform up to the standard of care that is required of them. In 2007, Rhode Island Hospital, on three separate occasions, operated on the wrong side of a patient’s head. Two patients recovered, but one died. These needless injuries are frustrating and deeply saddening to both the victim and their families. Some of the most common injuries are caused by:

  • Needless surgeries
  • Inadequate training and experience of surgeon
  • Improper incisions
  • Puncture or nerve damage to organs, tissues, nerves, etc
  • Wrong site surgery (wrong body part/organ operated upon or removed)
  • Surgical tools, sponges, gauze, etc left in patient
  • Infection complications

Sadly many surgical errors are preventable if proper protocol is followed. Nearly all hospitals have a system in place where the patient is identified before surgery, the procedure is reviewed and surgical site is identified before the surgery begins. However, not all surgeons and medical staff follow the safety steps which are in place. If you believe that you or a loved one has been the victim of surgical negligence, we can help.
