The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FIS), the public health
agency in the US Department of Agriculture responsible for ensuring
that the nation’s commercial supply of meat, poultry, and
egg products is safe, wholesome and correctly labeled and packaged,
has announced a recall involving about 884 pounds of ground beef
that may be contaminated with E. Coli 0157:H7. E. Coli 0157:H7
is a dangerous bacterium that can cause serious injury or death.
The ground beef was sold at Shaw’s grocery stores in Connecticut,
Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
The products subject to recall include 1.33-pound trays of “SHAW’S
FRESH GROUND ROUND BEEF PATTIES, 85/15.” Each package bears
the establishment number “Est. 492” inside the US Department
of Agriculture (USDA) mark of inspection. Each “Nutrition
Facts” label bears a time stamp between “17:05” and “17:25” as
well as a date code of “243.”
The FIS issued the following statement: “The ground beef
products were produced on Aug. 31, 2007, and were distributed to
retail establishments in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. [The ‘retail establishments” the
ground beef was distributed to were Shaw’s grocery store.
If you ate ground beef purchased from a Shaw’s grocery store,
you will need to watch for symptoms of E. coli poisoning, including
watery or bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping, and sometimes
nausea and vomiting. E.coli poisoning can quickly develop into
hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in young children, the elderly,
and people with compromised immune systems. Please contact your
doctor immediately if you suspect E. coli poisoning.]
E. Coli symptoms can include:
- Severe cramps
- Diarrhea
- Mild fever
- Nausea or vomiting
E.coli symptoms start approximately 7 days after infection.
The first sign is sudden, severe stomach cramps. Watery diarrhea starts
a few hours thereafter. The diarrhea will change to bright red
bloody stools because of sores caused by infection in your intestines.
You may have a mild fever. You may also have nausea or vomiting.
Consult your doctor immediately if you have any of these symptoms.
What is Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)?
Though most people recover from an E.coli infection, some of those
infected develop hemolytic uremic syndrome, which is a severe and
life-threatening complication. Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) – pronounced
HEE-mo-LIT-ik you-REE-mik syndrome – is an illness that most
commonly occurs in the aftermath of food poisoning, particularly
infection from E. coli bacteria. HUS usually affects children under
the age of 10 but adolescents and adults can get HUS as well.
HUS causes damage and destruction of the red blood cells reducing
the number of red blood cells below normal (a condition called
anemia). In the most severe cases, HUS can include damage to the
kidneys, which can lead to failure of the kidneys (renal failure).
Other complications that can accompany the illness are thrombocytopenia
(platelet deficiency in the blood) and nerologic signs, including
irritability and, very rarely, seizures.
If you or someone you know has contracted food poisoning as a
result of consuming ground beef purchased from Shaw’s, you
may be able to recover damages to compensate for that injury. Your
first step in recovering damages is to have your case evaluated
by a qualified food poisoning attorney. Have your case evaluated
as quickly as you can because each state has a law that governs
the amount of time allowed to file this kind of lawsuit (Food poisoning
statute of limitations). If your food poisoning lawsuit is not
filed within that time period, you will lose any claims you might
have had. d’Oliveira & Associates is currently evaluating
