  • Hyperglycemia – A condition in which an excessive amount of glucose circulates in the blood plasma.

  • Diabetes – A disease in which the body is unable to use and store glucose. Typically caused by a decrease or lack of insulin production.

  • Pancreatitis – An inflammation of the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach that secretes insulin.

  • Ketoacidosis – The most severe state of diabetes in which there are markedly elevated glucose levels in blood and urine, elevated ketones in blood and urine, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance.

  • Hyperosmolar Coma - The loss of consciousness related to high levels of glucose in the blood. The person may or may not have a previous history of diabetes.

Seroquel (Quetiapine) is an atypical antipsychotic. It is manufactured by AstraZeneca and was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997. Antipsychotics are typically used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia and related disorders.

Seroquel has been marketed for off label uses, conditions that were not approved by the FDA.

These conditions include:

  • Anxiety
  • Major depression
  • Insomnia
  • Behaviors related to dementia.

At the FDA’s request, warning labels have been added to product packaging to notify customers of the increased health risks of using this drug and to make customers aware Seroquel is not approved for the treatment of dementia.

The FDA advises Seroquel consumers to be careful when driving or operating heavy machinery because the drug can impair judgment. It can cause dizziness and sometimes fainting because of a drop in blood pressure. The FDA also advises consumers to remain hydrated and to not become overheated because the drug can make it harder to lower one’s body temperature.

PLEASE SPEAK WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE DISCONTINUING THE USE OF SEROQUEL OR ANY OTHER PRESCRIPTION DRUGS.
