Seroquel (Quetiapine) is an atypical antipsychotic. It is manufactured by AstraZeneca and was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997. Antipsychotics are typically used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia and related disorders.

Seroquel has been marketed for off label uses, conditions that were not approved by the FDA. These conditions include anxiety, major depression, insomnia and behaviors related to dementia.

At the FDA’s request, warning labels have been added to product packaging to notify customers of the increased health risks of using this drug and to make customers aware Seroquel is not approved for the treatment of dementia.

The FDA advises Seroquel consumers to be careful when driving or operating heavy machinery because the drug can impair judgment. It can cause dizziness and sometimes fainting because of a drop in blood pressure. The FDA also advises consumers to remain hydrated and to not become overheated because the drug can make it harder to lower one’s body temperature.
