On May 15, 2006 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a global recall of ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution. The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) are investigating 109 reported cases of a serious eye infection, fusarium keratitis, which can cause blindness. If you believe that you or a loved one has suffered as a result of the use of ReNu with MoistureLoc, you may want to speak with an attorney. The FDA and the CDCP expected their investigations to continue through May 2006. Their inspections included the manufacturing facility, products, environmental factors and raw materials. ReNu with MoistureLoc is produced at Bausch’s Greenville, South Carolina manufacturing facility. The first reports of fusarium keratitis were among contact lens users in Asia, in February of 2006. As a result of these reports, Bausch & Lomb suspended sales of ReNu contact lens solution in Singapore and Hong Kong.

In the latest development, the FDA said Bausch & Lomb delayed reporting to the federal agency 35 infection cases in Singapore that were linked to ReNu with MoistureLoc. The FDA said the company also failed to follow procedures to prevent contamination at a factory where the lens cleaner was made.

On August 23, 2006, The Journal of the American Medical Association published a CDCP report, revealing that one-third of patients diagnosed with fusarium keratitis had such severe infections that they had or will need a corneal transplant. The study, “Multistate Outbreak of Fusarium Keratitis Associated with use of Contact Lens Solution,” found that ReNu with MoistureLoc was responsible for the outbreak of potentially blinding fungal eye infections in the last year. To date federal health officials have reviewed 30 cases. Out of 30 patients, 26 have reported using Bausch & Lomb ReNu contact lens solution or a generic product made by Bausch & Lomb. Eight patients have undergone corneal transplants.

Contact lens users with eye redness, pain, tearing, blurred vision, light sensitivity or discharge should stop wearing contacts and see their physician immediately.
