Medication or Prescription Error:

Medication or prescription errors can have deadly consequences. About 57% of medication errors result in serious illness or death. Taking the wrong medication is very dangerous. In addition, these mistakes add 2 to 5 days onto the patient’s hospital stay. Equally dangerous is taking a medication that has an adverse interaction with another prescribed medication. Medication or prescription error occurs when:

  • Wrong medicine or prescription is given
  • Wrong dosage (too much or too little)
  • Allergic reactions to medicine or prescription
  • Negligent prescription (missed or failure to recognize drug interaction)
  • Failure to counsel (failure to properly instruct patient on how to take the medication or prescription)
  • Errors in writing or filling prescriptions
  • Failure to know proper uses of drugs

As the number of people on medication and the number of prescriptions people take increase, more needs to be done to prevent medication and prescription errors. About 2.5 billion prescriptions are dispensed in U.S. pharmacies and 3.75 billion drugs are given in hospitals each year. Nearly all medication and prescription errors are preventable. However, they continue to occur due to out dated and non-computerized systems.

If you or a loved one were given the wrong medicine by your doctor and were hurt by it, you may have a claim against your doctor as well as the pharmacy. If you are in the hospital at the time, you may have a claim against the hospital employee who gave the medication to you. If you believe that you or a loved one has been hurt because of a doctor’s failure to give you the right medication, we can help. Our attorneys are qualified, experienced and ready to work on your behalf.
