Hydroxycut Voluntarily Recalled After FDA Warns Of Serious Liver Injuries

Iovate Health Sciences began voluntarily recalling their Hydroxycut branded products in the United States on May 1, 2009. This action was taken after the company became aware of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) warning to consumers to stop using Hydroxycut products.

Hydroxycut is a brand name for a line of dietary supplements and weight loss products. It is reported to be the number one selling over-the-counter dietary supplement for weight loss.

The FDA has received 23 reports involving serious health problems related to use of Hydroxycut.

Adverse events include

• Jaundice
• Elevated liver enzymes
• Liver damage requiring a liver transplant
• One death due to liver failure

Liver injuries are rare, but exist, according to the FDA.

Symptoms of liver injury include:

• Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eye)
• Brown urine
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Light colored stools
• Excessive fatigueweakness, stomach or abdominal pain, itching and loss of appetite.

Serious reports of injury have not been received by the FDA for all Hydroxycut products, although Iovate Health Sciences the manufacturer and distributor of the products have agreed to recall all products.

• Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
• Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
• Hydroxycut Hardcore Ready-to-Drink (RTD)
• Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
• Hydroxycut 24
• Hydroxycut Carb Control
• Hydroxycut Natural
