Denture Cream Causes Zinc Poisoning

UPDATE:

In August 2008, the journal “Neurology” published a report on four denture cream users who developed sever neurological problems. The study was done by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. The researchers were able to determine that the patients’ symptoms were caused by exposure to zinc in denture cream.

The study stressed the fact that one tube of denture cream, when used according to the recommended amount, should last anywhere between 3 and 10 weeks. The study showed that the patients were using roughly two tubes per week. This meant that they had been exposing themselves to excessive amounts of zinc. Not only did these patients show signs of extremely high levels of zinc in their blood, but they also showed much lower levels of copper. High levels of zinc can deplete copper in the body.

The researchers said that these high levels of zinc are not unusual because many people whose dentures do not fit correctly will use excessive amounts of denture cream to fix the problem. Unfortunately, denture cream manufacturers are unwilling to disclose the amount of zinc in their products. It is also interesting to note that the usage directions on the packaging is very vague and does not include a specific amount to be applied. These factors lead to consumers being unaware that these products endanger their health. The FDA and other agencies recommend that users of SuperPoliGrip, PoliGrip, and Fixodent either find different brands or use these brands as recommended.

If you have been using one of these denture creams and believe that you may have been injured, it is imperative that you have a blood test done to determine whether your zinc and copper levels have been altered. These blood tests should be done within 4 months of your last usage.

Treatment for zinc poisoning is not always successful. Some patients have seen a reversal of their symptoms, however, for most the effects are permanent. Zinc poisoning is extremely serious. If you believe that you or a loved one has suffered from zinc poisoning, caused by denture cream, you may want to speak with an attorney regarding a potential lawsuit.
