Defective Zimmer Durom Hip Cups

On July 22, 2008, Zimmer, Inc. suspended sales of its Durom Hip Cup, and sent a letter to surgeons and patients recommending that doctors monitor the replacement hips closely. The hip cups were designed for use in young, active patients who are likely to outlive a conventional prosthesis. Alarmingly, these cups are failing at much higher rate than expected.

A highly respected orthopedic researcher and surgeon, Dr. Larry Dorr, disclosed information that these cups were failing at an alarmingly high rate within the first two years of implantation. Dr. Dorr claimed that the cups had to be surgically revised within two years. The cups were showing the classic symptoms of loose implants and even popped off with just a small tap on the edge of the cup. Other cups have migrated short distances and tilted as well. The problem is that the cups are not seating properly and causing various complications with the implantations.

Zimmer continues to blame the problems on surgeon errors, however the facts suggest otherwise. Research suggests that the circular cutting surface on the periphery of the cup that we believe prevents the cup from fully seating. After the brief suspension, Zimmer has continued selling and marketing their Durom hip cups and continues to sell them to this day.
