Hot Dog Chili Sauce and other products Recalled for Botulism Poisoning

Castleberry’s Food Company, a subsidiary of Bumble Bee Seafood’s, recalled 90 types of canned chili, beef stew, corned beef hash, pet foods, and other meat products. These products were produced at a plant linked to a botulism outbreak. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that millions of these cans are being recalled nationwide because of possible contamination with the deadly botulinum toxin.

Botulism Poisoning Symptoms:
Botulism can occur 6 hours to 2 weeks after eating tainted food. Botulism poisoning has the following symptoms:

  • Blurred vision
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Muscle weakness
  • Slurred speech
  • Difficulty swallowing

Botulism can cause paralysis and leads to death in about 8% of cases. If not treated properly, botulism can paralyze breathing muscles. Victims can spend months on hospital ventilators until the botulism toxin is out of their system.

The FDA advised consumers to search their cupboards and shelves for any of the products from Castleberry’s Food Co. Those cans should not be opened under any circumstances. Robert Brackett, director of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition stated, “Discard them immediately. Double-bag the cans in plastic bags that are tightly closed, then place them in a trash receptacle outside the home.” The reason for this warning is that Botulinum is so toxic that it can cause paralysis merely by breathing it in or exposing it to broken skin, he says.

If you or someone you know has contracted Botulism as a result of consuming food products, you may be able to recover damages to compensate for that injury. Your first step in recovering damages is to have your case evaluated by a qualified Botulism attorney. Have your case evaluated as quickly as you can because each state has a law that governs the amount of time allowed to file this kind of lawsuit (Food poisoning statute of limitations). If your Botulism lawsuit is not filed within that time period, you will lose any claims you might have had. d’Oliveira & Associates is currently evaluating cases of Botulism poisoning related to the Castleberry recall.
