Asbestos Background Info

Many people don't even know they have been exposed to asbestos. Others know they have had asbestos exposure but were never told of the potential danger to their health and welfare.

During the twentieth century, some 30 million tons of asbestos were used in industrial sites, homes, schools, shipyards and commercial buildings in the United States. Asbestos exposure is still a problem because a great deal of it has been used in the United States and elsewhere.

Many asbestos-containing products remain in buildings, ships, industrial facilities and other environments where the fibers can become airborne. It is even possible that a family member could have been exposed, because microscopic asbestos fibers on their clothing can come off at home.

Asbestosis

Asbestosis is the benign, non-cancerous, asbestos caused disease. If you have been diagnosed with asbestosis, you have been exposed to asbestos. If you have been exposed to asbestos you have the potential of developing mesothelioma.

Asbestosis is mechanical damage to the lung caused by inhaling asbestos. The asbestos fibers tend to irritate the lung tissue causing inflammation. The condition may not surface for years after the inhalation of asbestos, and many times asbestosis takes more than twenty years to manifest itself.Occupational exposure of asbestos-related disease includes, but is not limited to; mining, milling, insulation, textile manufacturing, construction, ship building, gaskets, brake linings, and more recently the removal of asbestos.

The inflammation and scarring caused by the lodged asbestos fibers eventually cause breathing difficulties (from shortness of breath to respiratory failure) and may lead to mesothelioma and lung cancer. Other complications include tuberculosis, inflammation of the tissue lining the lungs (pleurisy), and heart failure.

Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a cancerous tumor that is caused by asbestos exposure. Inhaling any of the many forms of asbestos fibers causes mesothelioma cancers.

There are currently about 3000 new cases of mesothelioma diagnosed per year, mostly in men over the age of 40. It is estimated that there will be about 250,000 cases of mesothelioma before 2020. mesothelioma has a latency period of 20 to 50 years after the first exposure to asbestos. That means that if you worked around asbestos 50 years ago, you could be developing mesothelioma now.

The respiratory effects of asbestos exposure are irreversible. Asbestos is a major health hazard, and its detrimental health effects have been known for years. Cigarette smoking does not contribute to this type of cancer.

With today's workplace safety regulations, the risk of exposure is substantially lower. However, mesothelioma and other asbestos diseases continue to crop up everyday as a result of past exposure that occurred many years ago. Doctors treat mesothelioma with surgery (removal of the cancerous tissue), chemotherapy, or radiation. The treatment chosen for any individual will depend on the stage of the disease, other medical problems, age and physical condition of the patient, and any prior treatment.

It is always in the patient's best interest to contact a specialist who is familiar with mesothelioma, and is well versed on current treatments and techniques.

Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer is the most common type of cancer. It has been found in those who have sustained prolonged exposure to asbestos. The time between exposure to asbestos and the occurrence of lung cancer is often 20 to 30 years or more.

Smoking and asbestos have both been found to be causes of lung cancer. It has been determined that smokers who are also exposed to asbestos are substantially more likely to develop lung cancer than those who are only exposed to one or the other. Evidence shows that people who smoke and were occupationally exposed to asbestos increase their risk of developing lung cancer by ninety times the normal rate of people who smoke but were never exposed to asbestos. It is important to note that those who smoke are not prohibited from seeking compensation from those companies responsible for asbestos-related disease. Your Rights

Many asbestos manufacturers and distributors knew for decades that asbestos was hazardous, yet made a business decision not to warn people of those hazards. As a result, you may have a right of recovery against those manufacturers, which can help defray the costs of treatment and provide compensation for your pain and suffering.

Your compensation will be determined by factors such as lost income, the laws in your state, and the parties responsible.
